Principal's Message

Dear Prospective STEM Families,

Welcome to Oakboro Choice STEM School.  Stanly County’s first STEM School in all aspects of learning.  I hope you will find our website user friendly and helpful in answering any questions you may have.  I understand how very important it is to choose the right educational experience for your student and ensure that the environment is one in which they will thrive and discover their strengths and talents.  Although we are a public school, we are a choice school, which enables students from all over the district to apply to attend for the following academic year in grades Kindergarten through 8th.  This is a unique opportunity to begin the STEM styled and problem based learning at the earliest of stages, when a child’s mind is still innately curious.  This preparation gives them a solid foundation as they enter into the competitive realm of high school and eventually college or the workforce.

It is my hope that you will take advantage of our visitation days, where your student can be paired with a STEM scholar for the day and experience all the school has to offer. We will also offer a parent to parent night to hear first hand from other parents to help you know if the STEM school is the right fit not just for your student, but for your whole family.  This holistic approach to education, is key to success as it is a team effort that will see your child achieve their very best.

At the heart of our school is its community support and involvement to create lifelong learners through inquiry based learning, real life application and above all fun and challenging exploration.  All aspects of education in our unique STEM experience will create leaders for a lifetime.

Kelly Dombrowski

Principal of Oakboro Choice STEM

So far, 2020 marks a year of great changes and many unknowns.  We have worked hard this summer to prepare for multiple versions of how we will return to school, but one thing remains consistent and that is the love and care we have for our scholars and their families.  We know  that each child and family need something different and true to the STEM learning style, teamwork and collaboration works best both in the classroom and throughout our school.  As you are making decisions that fit your family’s needs best, know that we are a team and are here to help you make it work!

This year, students may return to different processes throughout the day, but the same hands on learning will remain the same.  Teachers have been planning new ways to do dynamic activities, but within guidelines so that scholars can continue their STEM learning safely.

When you arrive on campus you will see a new look for our exterior doors.  This window tinting not only sparks school pride, but keeps our students and staff safer by minimizing the ability to see in during the school days. We are so thankful to our amazing PTO for making this happen.  Our garden is back up and running with above ground boxes donated this spring and ready to have classes plant their seeds and track growth. This spring we utilized our remote status to “visit” the world with scholars getting to google meet with guests from many countries such as Norway, England, Thailand and Germany!  This same international perspective will be shared throughout this school year with the relationships we forged this past spring and we are excited to expand our global exposure and awareness when we return in the fall!

We have a lot to be excited about, most of all about seeing you again, but whether you choose to return to school in a seated classroom or remotely- you are an Oakboro scholar and we are in this together! Seated or remote, we will continue to build a culture of excellence because we are a small community, building GLOBAL thinkers… WE ARE OAKBORO!!

I look forward to seeing you!
