What is STEM?

STEM education is an interdisciplinary approach to learning where rigorous academic concepts are coupled with real-world lessons as students apply science, technology, engineering, and mathematics in contexts that make connections between school, community, work, and the global enterprise enabling the development of STEM literacy and with it the ability to compete in the new economy. (Tsupros, 2009)

Hey! That's a GREAT textbook definition....but I STILL don't get it!  What IS STEM????

STEM is short for Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics. It is hard to simply define what STEM is.  Everything, at it's most basic, is STEM.  It's all in how you look at it.  And it's ALL about asking questions!  For Oakboro Choice STEM School, STEM is all about the Engineering Design Cycle and Problem Based Learning.

We will use the Engineering Design Cycle and Problem Based Learning to solve real world problems through the lense of the NC State Curriculum. Students, of all grade levels and in all classes, will be asking questions and solving problems. What STEM problem have YOU solved today?

STILL not sure about STEM??? We invite the community to visit us at our regularly scheduled events and see for yourself.
